MP Blog: School Prizegiving
I love this time of year. School prizegivings really showcase the depth and breadth of talent we have in our young people. Last week I attended Putaturu College prizegiving and this week I’m off to Tokoroa High School and Tauhara College events.
Our young people attain incredible achievements in arts, culture, sports and academia and some do well in all of them!
I think the thing that really stands out for me when I attend is the support and encouragement they give to each other. I don’t remember this from my time at school. It is hard not to be moved when a group of young people erupt into a spontaneous haka in recognition of the achievement of one of their own.
Prizegivings are also an opportunity to showcase the talented students who perform solos or in groups – rock, pop, classics and hapa haka.
For those in our communities who spend too much time criticising “the youth of today” I think a visit to school prizegiving would give them a different perspective.
